The historic Appalachian Theatre, has entertained audiences in the heart of downtown Boone, North Carolina since 1938.

Once a gorgeous 999-seat Art Deco movie house, the building closed in 2007 and sat empty and gutted for years. On October 14, 2019, the Appalachian Theatre re-opened its doors after a $10 million renovation that brought the distinctive Art Deco details back to this historic theatre and created a new 629-seat, state-of-the-art, acoustically fabulous venue for live concerts, films, plays, and dance performances.  The spacious community room with historic murals provides Boone with the only downtown venue capable of hosting meetings and receptions for over 100 people.

Upcoming bands include:

  • Saturday, February 3 – Local Night Music Series – Alice Gerrard and Friends, 7:30 PM –
Old-time and bluegrass musician Alice Gerrard has championed traditional music for close to 60 years. Beginning with her trailblazing early duo recordings with Appalachian singer and activist Hazel Dickens, the 89-year-old’s music has always been grounded, anti-establishment, and heartfelt. Gerrard channels many modes of creative expression pulled from her unmatched archive of inspiration. “When you’ve been playing for as long as I have, you can start from scratch – using just the music you’ve heard over your life,” she says.

She cut her teeth in D.C. and Baltimore’s politically-informed folk revival and bluegrass scenes of the 1950s and 1960s and toured in the early post-Jim Crow South with the Southern Folk Cultural Revival Project, Bernice Johnson Reagon and Anne Romaine’s groundbreaking racially-integrated coalition of traditional musicians.

Alice Gerrard’s eclectic repertoire of songs and focus on community has drawn in devotees like Rhiannon Giddens (who in a recent New York Times retrospective of Gerrard’s career called her “inspiring as hell”), Le Tigre (who referenced Gerrard and Dickens by name in their dance-punk anthem “Hot Topic”), and Emmylou Harris (to her, Gerrard is “the real deal”). Inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Association Hall of Fame in 2017, and the subject of the 2019 feature documentary You Gave Me a Song (The Groove Productions), there are few living artists who have touched so many parts of the bluegrass and old-time music world in the U.S, not to mention the greater tapestries of popular and folk music, as Alice Gerrard.

  • Thursday, February 29 – Local Night Music Series – Handlebar Betty & Blue Ridge Girls, 7:30 PM –          Handlebar Betty is a genre bending, harmony driven, Appalachian folk-grass band born out of Boone, North Carolina. The band blends original songwriting with innovative covers of traditional and current songs; creating a lively and engaging show that transcends genres and basic string band stereotypes. Everyone in Handlebar Betty sings both lead and harmony vocals and plays different instruments. Because each person in the band brings a different style of song to the table, whether it’s cover or an original tune, it has a unique point of view, tone and vibe that’s distinctive from a song someone else leads. Handlebar Betty is a true “Ensemble Cast”. This level of collaboration in a band makes for a fresh and interesting performance time after time. The band features: Meris Gantt, Chad Berry, Anna Huffman, Rachiel Musumarra, Devin Lacey. The Blue Ridge Girls, like their name, invoke a picturesque simplicity with their take on traditional mountain music. The trio features Martha Spencer, Jamie Collins and Brett Morris. They feature a variety of old time, bluegrass and country songs, flatfooting to fiddle and banjo tunes, with original songwriting and a unique take on other familiar crowd-pleasers. All three women grew up in musical families and are working to preserve and promote the Blue Ridge’s rich musical heritage.

  • Thursday, March 7 – Local Night Music Series – Kelley & The Cowboys with Boone JAM, 7:30 PM –
    Kelley & the Cowboys
    – If you love real country music, the kind they used to make in the heyday of classic country, you won’t want to miss this show! Kelley has been called “more Patsy Cline than Patsy Cline” by The Raleigh News and Observer and said to have “a barn burnin’ attitude with the boots to match.” Founded in 2005 by female vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Kelley Breiding, Kelley and The Cowboys are a 4-piece band from NC who put their signature sound on old standards and original music in a style heavily influenced by early forms of western swing, rockabilly, country, and blues.Kelley is an accomplished, award-winning claw-hammer banjo player, a fiddler, guitar player, and bassist and stays busy as a full-time member of the award-winning Old-Time stringband, The Crooked Road Ramblers, host of The Floyd Radio Show and her own variety show, The Blue Ridge Opry, and as an occasional vocalist for the NC Sacred Steel Legends, The Allen Boys. Kelley has helped pass these traditions on by teaching Old Time fiddle and flat-picking guitar in the Ashe County Junior Appalachian Musicians program since 2017. The Cowboys are Jimmy Tremor, on lead guitar, Colby Jack on upright bass, and Steve-O Price on drums.Opening the show is the Boone J.A.M. Jones House Jammers featuring Orson Cornett, Asa Freed, Tucker Conner, Eli Richardson, and Noah Lanham with instructor Ella Hennessee. The Boone Junior Appalachian Musicians program hosts affordable group music lessons for a number of traditional folk instruments at the Jones House Cultural Center.
