Doors open at 6:00 pm on Tuesday and Saturday evenings to accomodate the groups of people found standing around outside in front of the old Spartan Theater, waiting impatiently for the band to strike up its first tune of the night. While waiting for the music, some find a seat inside the theater and change from their usual footwear into their stark-white, steel-tap bottomed dancing shoes. Other quietly converse over a cup of coffee. The scene is the weekly Alleghany Jubilee where flatfooting, clogging, buckdancing, and especially the mountain two-step are the order of the evening. Live bands play Bluegrass on Tuesdays and Old Time on Saturdays and on Monday evening folks come out for Line Dancing Lessons (to recorded music). What ever night you choose, the Alleghany Jubilee provides a great musical show and wonderful opportunity to see real traditional dancers who, for the most part, are regulars who come often and are well practiced in local dance and music traditions.
$3.00/Monday, $5.00/Tuesday, $6.00/Saturday, Children 12 and under Free unless special events warrent a reduced admittance.
