SUMMARY:Quay Smathers Memorial Singing School
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a day immersed in beautiful harmony\, great company and a homemade Dinner on the Grounds — bring a dish to share. \nQuay Smathers (1913-1997)\, singing master and recipient of the prestigious North Carolina Folk Heritage Award\, tirelessly taught shaped-note singing from Georgia to Michigan and points in between. Today\, those who learned under Quay remember his quick wit\, his clear voice\, and his strong convictions about saving a musical tradition passed down from his ancestors in Western North Carolina. \nThe Quay Smathers Memorial Singing School is devoted to carrying on his work of raising up shaped-note singers who desire to sing in the traditional style originally heard in the Blue Ridge mountains of Georgia\, North and South Carolina\, Tennessee and Virginia. The book of choice is The Christian Harmony  by William Walker and much attention is given to tempo\, phrasing\, and oral traditions. \nHeld in the historic Shook-Smathers House\, the  singing school is taught by leaders in the Blue Ridge style of shaped-note singing\, including Quay’s daughters June Smathers-Jolley and Elizabeth Smathers-Shaw\, and son-in-law Lynn Shaw. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the tradition\, a proficiency in singing shaped-notes as originally sung in the Southern Appalachians\, and resources to continue their own personal exploration of the practice.

SUMMARY:Concerts at the The Don Gibson Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Concerts at the The Don Gibson Theatre is a 400 seat venue and  intimate concert hallfeaturing best in nationally known acts\, musicians who’ve graced magazine covers\, who’ve earned Grammy Awards and Gold Albums and “Best of the Year” Awards… people whose CD’s (and albums) you may already have in your collection. We’ll also very carefully select the newest up-and-coming acts out of Nashville and New York and Austin\, acts you may not have heard of yet… but given a chance you will be talking about for months after. \nUpcoming Concerts: \n\nApril 29 – Paul Thorn\, 8:00 pm\, $32.00. We live in a world where the terms “artist” and “genius” have been rendered meaningless through overuse. To use either in describing Thorn\, though\, is not overreach. Pick up any of his dozen or so CDs. The evidence is plain to see. Just listen. It’s a kind of genius\, and it’s there plain to see\, in his music\, his art and through his performances\, which not only showcase his chops as a singer-songwriter\, but as a pitch-perfect improv comic.

SUMMARY:Concerts at Smoky Mountain Center for the Performing Arts
DESCRIPTION:Concerts at Smoky Mountain Center for the Performing Arts hosts a wide varriety of plays concerts and community events throughout the year. \nUpcoming traditiona moutain music events include: \n\n\n\nMay 13 – An Evening With Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives\, 7:30 pm\, $29.00\, $34.00\, $39.00 (VIP Package also available). With legends like George Jones\, Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard all passed on\, country music purists often echo the question Jones himself asked: “Who’s going to fill their shoes?” The answer\, in part\, is Marty Stuart.\nWhile he’s too gracious to admit it himself\, the Grammy-winning singer\, songwriter and musician is living\, breathing country-music history. He’s played alongside the masters\, from Cash to Lester Flatt\, who discovered him; been a worldwide ambassador for Nashville\, Bakersfield and points in between; and safeguarded country’s most valuable traditions and physical artifacts. Stuart continues to record and release keenly relevant music\, records that honor country’s rich legacy while advancing it into the future.\nWhen it comes to transforming country songs into tangible experience\, Stuart has a secret weapon: the Fabulous Superlatives. Made up of guitarist Kenny Vaughan\, drummer Harry Stinson and new member\, bassist Chris Scruggs\, the Superlatives are an extension of Stuart\, himself a truly visionary artist and music legend.\nMay 27 – High Road\, 7:30\, $15.00. Ask Sarah Davison what her favorite Bible verse is\, and she’ll immediately quote Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him\, and He will make your paths straight.” It’s a scripture that has accompanied the acclaimed singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist through life’s highs and lows\, and one she hand-copied—in a flowery cursive script—from her grandmother’s Bible. “That verse has been with me from my hometown of 150 people to Nashville\, going after what I feel called to do\, trusting that He’s leading me down the right road\,” she reflects.

SUMMARY:Unto these Hills
DESCRIPTION:At Unto These Hills\, you can feel a slight chill run up your spine; but not from the mountain winds shifting their direction in anticipation of the coming dusk. It is from your anticipation of the coming drama. Unto These Hills drama is the tragic and triumphant story of the Cherokee that traces back to the years before the heartbreak of the Trail of Tears to the present day. Millions of people have witnessed America’s most powerful drama\, which rewrites the Cherokee’s place in the world. A place based on traditional Cherokee values and modern sensibilities. \nSynopsis: \nThe play opens with the arrival of the Spanish Conquistador\, Hernando DeSoto in 1540. The appearance of DeSoto and his army establishes an ominous portent of what will befall the Cherokee Nation during the next three-hundred years. Early on the famous Cherokee leader\, Yonaguska deliberates the fate of all Native peoples\, and yet charts a peaceful course with his white neighbors and the American government. He even joins forces with Andrew Jackson at the famous Battle of Horseshoe Bend where another famous Cherokee leader\, Junaluska saves Jackson’s life. Despite this\, Jackson will later develop policies as President that usurp previous promises of Cherokee sovereignty and deliberately charts a course for the removal of the Cherokee from their traditional homelands. The discovery of gold in Cherokee County in 1835 sets the stage for tribal lands to be overrun by the whites\, who illegally occupy lands\, build settlements and town\, and generally disregard the cultural practices and freedoms of the Native population. Also during this time\, unscrupulous land agents descend upon area\, carrying out the Manifest Destiny ideology\, as well as creating deep divisions among the Cherokee people. It is at this point where the heartbreaking story of Tsali and his family begins to unfold. His unrelenting mistrust of the United States Government\, along with his intense love of his people and their traditional ways\, gives rise to an inevitable – and ultimately deadly – clash between him and the over-powering forces of the United States Army. Tsali’s resistance to removal leads to the untimely death of his beloved wife\, Wilani\, as well as him and his sons near the end of the play. They sacrifice themselves so that a small group of Cherokee will be able to remain in their homeland. But sadly\, shortly following the men’s execution\, the infamous Trail of Tears begins. Despite this dark and tragic episode in the lives of the Cherokee\, the ending of the play is filled with beautifully sculpted imagery and effective emotional symmetry\, symbolizing the re-emergence of a people whose spiritual fortitude\, social complexities\, and human courage will never be broken.

SUMMARY:Carl Sandburg Music Festival
DESCRIPTION:This music festival celebrates American music as Carl Sandburg recorded it in his book\, “The American Songbag.” Compiling and publishing the American Songbag was one of the most difficult projects Sandburg took on during his life. Today\, the Carl Sandburg Music Festival celebrates his work and the work of modern singers and songwriters to share diverse and original American music. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Snacks will be available for sale in the bookstore and tours of the Sandburg home will be available throughout the day for a small fee. \nParking – A courtesy shuttle will run from satellite parking lots at the Flat Rock Playhouse (located across the street) and from the Flat Rock Village Offices (110 Village Center Drive) to the park entrance\, throughout the day.  It is a short walk from the park entrance to the amphitheater.  There will be also be a shuttle operating inside the park to take visitors from the entrance to the amphitheater\, Sandburg Home and barn area. \nBench seating is available and visitors are also welcome to bring lawn chairs and blankets as seating is expected to fill quickly. Come prepared for warm weather\, with sun protection\, water and snacks. Dogs are not permitted in the seating areas for the festival.

SUMMARY:Art of Sound Music Festival
DESCRIPTION:Art Of Sound is a music festival by and for lovers of the arts and music. It began as a local festival\, and by word of mouth has grown into a respected regional event. AOS now attracts headliner acts from the national scene. In spite of being bigger and better\, it retains its hometown charm. \nThe Art of Sound is not your typical music “festival” in fact it almost has the feel of a weekend concert series. Our festival supports local and regional musicians and serves as a gift to the community from the Arts Council as it is FREE! \nThe festival is in uptown Shelby\, N.C.\, the home of Earl Scruggs and Don Gibson. It is held on the historic court square and nestled in several venues that afford the listener an up-close experience with the artists. Jack Lawrence once said it reminded him of the European festivals he and Doc used to play. The venues are tucked away at a variety of indoor stages around the square. It is a crisp\, cool\, time of year\, but you can enjoy in comfort regardless of the weather. \nAOS prides itself on a presentation of a variety of traditional music styles. You might hear bluegrass or jazz then Cajun\, county rock\, or old time later. Like MerleFest\, there are often spontaneous moments of improvisation in jam sessions you won’t hear elsewhere.

SUMMARY:Fiddle Week at The Swannanoa Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Since the invention of the violin\, the music of its unschooled alter-ego\, the fiddle\, has excited people to dance\, evoked the devil and the spiritual\, echoed the human voice and heart. Fiddle Week at the Swannanoa Gathering celebrates that universality with classes in traditional and contemporary styles ranging from Irish to Cajun\, from bluegrass to blues. The week also includes classes in guitar\, focusing on accompaniment in various styles\, and there are related offerings for the fiddle’s bigger siblings\, the cello and bass. \nRegistration and a detailed listing of classes\, instructors\, and weekly schedules available on The Swannanoa Gathering website.

SUMMARY:Jonathan Byrd and the Pickup Cowboys
DESCRIPTION:Jonathan Byrd is a preacher’s kid\, Gulf War veteran\, and award-winning songwriter with a near-cult following. With twenty plus years of touring and over a dozen albums\, Byrd’s deceptively simple\, working-class songs have become campfire standards and crowd favorites for artists like Sam Bush and Tim O’Brien. A Jonathan Byrd show will take audiences on a journey from hell-raising sing-alongs to heart-wrenching ballads and back across the backroads of his native North Carolina. \nA lifelong collaborator and innovator\, Jonathan Byrd’s latest project is Song Miners\, a project to not only write and release new songs\, but also to teach others how it’s done. Leading powerful online songwriting workshops and creating free songwriting education for social media\, Byrd seems on a mission to fill the world with great songs- not least\, his own. Not to be missed.

SUMMARY:Kelley and the Cowboys
DESCRIPTION:The feeling that hits you when you first hear the singing voice of NC native Kelley Breiding is akin to the sensation of seeing a ghost. There might be shivers up the spine\, hair standing up on the back of your neck\, and soon the realization that you might be encountering a spirit from another era. Patsy Cline\, Loretta Lynn\, Wanda Jackson\, Dinah Washington\, and Memphis Minnie come to mind. A sense of deja vu may wash over you– you think you’ve heard this voice before but you can’t put your finger on it. Maybe it’s just that there aren’t many out there making real country music anymore\, and certainly not in the tradition of great country female artists of days gone by.
