SUMMARY:Jam Sessions at the Barber Shop
DESCRIPTION:  \nOne of the more quaint musical venues in the Blue Ridge region is the tiny Drexel Barber Shop in the little town of Drexel. The shop features a very informal jam session. Thursday\, Friday\, and Saturday\, around 11:00 am‚ the guys at the barber shop generally put aside their scissors‚ shears‚ and combs and grab their instruments for a few hours of picking. Thursday and Friday are a mix of gospel and country\, while Saturday is bluegrass all day. This event occurs year-round on most‚ but not all‚ Saturday afternoons. \n  \n\n  \nRound out your visit to the Drexel Barber Shop by exploring these nearby towns and attractions. \nLawrence Anthony‚ the driving force behind the jam‚ passed away in December of 2009. Anthony’s son has set up a nonprofit account to repair and keep the shop open for the sake of the music and as a memorial to Anthony. Donations can be sent to the “Barber Shop Preservation Fund‚” c/o First Citizens Bank‚ Valdese‚ NC; taken to the barbershop; or sent to the Barber Shop Fund‚ 2744 Monarch Dr.‚ Charlotte‚ NC.

SUMMARY:Zuma Coffee Bluegrass Jam Session
DESCRIPTION:Every third Saturday of the month\, Zuma Coffee becomes a crowded bluegrass and old-time music venue. Those who want to get a seat inside should arrive well before the 2 pm start time. The eager-to-play musicians often get going before then\, and the gathering crowd grows large as a result. The jam session is part jam and part stage show. The musicians face the audience\, not each other\, as is the customary arrangement at a mountain jam session\, and most stand to play rather than sit. All musicians who want to join in and play are welcome\, regulars or not\, and a place in the line is made available. The jam session is open to everyone and focuses on old-time and bluegrass music. Listeners are welcome. The coffee is tasty\, and lunch is served… don’t forget the Zuma gold cookies!

SUMMARY:Cullowhee Friends & Family Reunion
DESCRIPTION:Cullowhee creates “mountain rock” music with roots at Western Carolina University.\nCullowhee is the name of the small town in North Carolina that’s the home of Western Carolina University. It’s also the name chosen by a group of musicians who started a band there in 1974. The band lasted until 1984. \nStarting as a trio\, Edwards\, Clark\, and Flynn\, the band grew to six pieces and created a musical sound they called “Mountain Rock” – a combination of folk\, country\, gospel\, pop and rock. They were “Americana” before there WAS “Americana.” \nEach band member wrote songs encompassing styles including pop\, rock\, country\, folk\, jazz\, reggae\, and other styles\, and played a multitude of musical instruments. Every set featured segments by each member – a show within a show. The mixture of personality\, music\, comedy\, and sincerity made a connection with many audiences. \nCullowhee lives on through the music and love of their fans.

SUMMARY:Stecoah Community Jam
DESCRIPTION:Community Jam \nEvery 3rd Tuesday\n5:30 pm to 7:30 pm \nMark your calendars for the 3rd Tuesday of every month to join us for a Schoolhouse Community Jam. Bring your instruments and join our circle! We invite musicians of all levels to come out and join together for an evening of playing together. \nYou can begin gathering / playing anytime after 5:30 pm. 5:30 – 6:00 will be a Slow Jam – great for beginners and novice musicians. You will be able to meet and play along with our JAM Band students. It’s the perfect opportunity to get your feet wet if you are new to jamming. The evening is strictly a jam time (no instruction) but is open to all ages and abilities. Our goal is to create a nurturing environment to encourage budding musicians (and those with dusty instruments). The remaining jam time we will take direction from the group as to what and how fast we play. We hope to see you there! \nNOTE: For the time being the monthly potluck is on hold but if the group desires to have the potluck we can resume it in the future.

SUMMARY:J.A.M. Concert & Dance: Junior Appalachian Musicians Spring Performance
DESCRIPTION:Come support and celebrate the hard work the teens have put into learning songs for a concert and bringing tunes up to speed for dancing. \nCommunity Dances are every Tuesday\, and occasional other nights. Lovely live music with our kind callers and dance instructors are a great intro to community dancing. If it is your first-time trying set-dancing\, come early for simple walkthroughs and instruction on the easier dances. You can expect CONTRAS\, SQUARES\, CIRCLES\, LINES and other traditional and modern PARTNER dance forms. There is no pressure to dance\, and there are always willing dance partners as folks switch throughout the evening. No special attire is required\, though clean hard soled shoes make it easier. Our focus is on traditional music and dance\, but watching\, jamming\, playing games\, crafting\, and other pastimes are welcomed and encouraged. There is a family friendly space in the Library. \nMost often our enthusiastic local dancer and caller\, Harrison Keely hosts an open mic dance from around 8-9pm on Tuesday nights after the regularly scheduled bands and callers. He welcomes and coaches anyone willing to try with a cheat sheet and prompt cues. If a quorum of dance musicians aren’t available\, the session proceeds with recorded music and contra or partner dancing ensues regardless. \nFor questions email music@folkschool.org  Our most up to date listings can be viewed at folkschool.org/calendar or folkschool.org/dances. You can also subscribe for weekly schedule emails or sync with your online calendar. \nSuggested $20 donation\, per adult (to support the JAM program).
