SUMMARY:Acoustic Corner
DESCRIPTION:It Begins with the Music\nMusic has great power to enrich the spirit and give expression to what stirs in the soul. As musicians\, every member of the crew at Acoustic Corner “gets it.” We know that every facet of our business – sales\, rentals\, repairs\, support – is about serving those who serve the music. Whether your needs are an acoustic guitar\, mandolin\, banjo\, ukulele\, or violin\, we aim to be your go-to acoustic music shop not only in Black Mountain\, but in the greater Asheville area. \nNeither Box-Store\, Nor Boutique\nWe are not a box-store focused on maximum sales with minimum customer interaction. Nor are we a boutique focused primarily on instruments the vast majority of people can’t afford. \nWe are an independent acoustic stringed instrument shop with a 20 year history of offering consistently high quality instruments and service to people\, many of whom we know on a first-name basis. Establishing and nurturing relationships is as important as anything we do. \nFinding the Right One for You\nAt Acoustic Corner\, we focus on helping you find the right instrument for you\, whether you are a beginner\, novice\, hobbyist or gigging musician. We provide the selection and the setting\, the information and the environment that can help you make the “right” decision for you. \nWe believe that you should see\, hold and play an instrument before buying it. So we encourage you to spend some time with us and with our instruments. Ask your questions. Pay attention to what you see\, hear and feel. You may just find the right one…and the right one may just find you. \nHours:\nMonday – Saturday 10:00 am – 6:00 pm\nClosed Sunday

SUMMARY:Concerts at 185 King Street
DESCRIPTION:185 King Street opened its doors in 2009 with a mission of supporting local musicians as the first entertainment business in the Lumberyard Arts District. \n…185 King Street is not as much an address as it is a destination. Located minutes from downtown Brevard in the shadows of the former Brevard railroad station\, this new venue for local music is about people of all walks of life finding a place where they can enjoy good times and great music together and turn what had recently been an overlooked location in a vibrant arts community into something that belongs to them. \nUpcoming Bluegrass and Traditional Concerts: \n\nMarch 5 – Chatham Rabbits\, 8:00 pm\, $15.00. North Carolina is a place so identifiable by its separate regions – the mountains\, the piedmont\, the coast – that it has the tendency to feel indescribable\, meaning one can conceptualize the state as a mashup of places rather than a single locale. The art and artists born from the state often embody that same sense of blended regions\, borrowing from broad cultural traditions and plumbing the histories of others’ stories on the way to telling their own. Because of this\, many North Carolina artists can call a particular region home\, but their work belongs to the state because the entirety of the state has opened itself to them and they have opened themselves to it. Chatham Rabbits exemplify North Carolina’s tradition of producing artists who embrace the state’s many cultural resources and diverse musical traditions.\nMarch 10 – Tray Wellington\, 7:00 pm $12.00 advance/$15.00 day of show. Tray Wellington Band is a high energy acoustic Newgrass group led by banjo virtuoso\, and multi-time IBMA Award winner\, and 2019 Momentum Instrumentalist of the year Tray Wellington. This group pushes the bounds of bluegrass music\, incorporating Bossa Nova\, Jazz\, and Blues elements\, to their originals to create a unique\, new exciting sound\, as well as pay tribute to their Bluegrass heroes before them. They have opened for a number of premiere artists in bluegrass including Dan Tyminski\, and Joe Mullins.\nMarch 12 – B-Town Live Bread of Life Benefit Concert\, 5:00 pm\, $25.00 advance\, $30.00 day of show. (This is a local fundraiser\, No Refunds) Join us for full evening of incredible local music all in the name of raising funds for our local soup kitchen\, Bread of Life. The house band for the evening is the Squibblers made up of Jeff Sipe\, Howie Johnson\, Mark McDaniel and Derek Sandlin with special guest Kevin Spears (Kalimba Man). Local bands\, Pretty Little Goat\, SOHCAHTOA and the New Elementals will also take the stage throughout the evening. A portion of the show will be broadcast live on White Squirrel Radion (Q102). Be sure to tune in.\nMarch 24 – Foreign Landers\, 7:00 pm\, Free show. The Foreign Landers is a duo hailing from opposite sides of the Atlantic united by their love of bluegrass and traditional folk music and their love for each other. Together they combine the musical styles of their respective homelands\, along with their instrumental prowess and haunting vocals to create something new.\nMarch 26 – Jon Stickley Trio with Gary McCullough\, 7:00 pm $20.00 general admission. Jon Stickley Trio is a genre-defying and cinematic instrumental trio\, who’s deep grooves\, innovative flatpicking\, and sultry-spacy violin moves the listener’s head\, heart\, and feet. “It’s not your father’s acoustic-guitar music—although Stickley’s pop showed him his first chords when he was 12 years old. Instead\, Stickley’s Martin churns out a mixture of bluegrass\, Chuck Berry\, metal\, prog\, grunge\, and assorted other genres—all thoroughly integrated into a personal style\,” writes Guitar Player Magazine. Gary McCullough is a Boone-based singer-songwriter who spent his formative years in Athens\, Georgia. His musical influences are broad and include insightful singer-songwriters from Jackson Browne and James Taylor to Jason Isbell and John Moreland\, as well as southern country/rock bands like the Drive by Truckers and Lucero. He has just recently released his first album\, Hard Climb\, recorded in Asheville and is back in the studio working on a second.\nApril 2 – Amanda Anne Platt & The Honeycutters w/ Opener Josh and Mallory Carter\, 8:00 pm\, $20.00. The music of Asheville\, North Carolina based outfit Amanda Anne Platt & The Honeycutters is nuanced\, bringing insight and wit to the stories Platt tells through songwriting. Lyrically driven\, the band’s country roots music often inspires introspection\, whether it be about life on the road\, heartache or hope.\nMay 14 – Sam Burchfield & The Scoundrels\, 8:00 pm\, $10.00 advance / $12.00 day of show. Raised in the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains of South Carolina\, Sam Burchfield was brought up on Appalachian music: folk\, gospel\, country and southern soul. The young songwriter draws on these roots with a deep lyrical honesty that carries the tradition of folk music forward. Burchfield’s latest album\, ‘Graveyard Flower’\, seeks to reconnect to the Appalachian roots that raised him. In a world of cell phones and internet distractions\, this body of work beckons the listener to plant their feet firmly in the soil. Reconnect to the land\, reconnect to each other; ‘Graveyard Flower’ is honest music.

SUMMARY:Music N'All at the Barn
DESCRIPTION:Not many people create a music venue in their front yard\, but several years ago\, Jerry Wilson and his wife Debbie decided their community needed a place for folks to come together and make music. \nNow\, on Tuesday nights\, and the second and fourth Saturday of each month\, people of all ages gather to see and hear bluegrass and gospel bands play in the Wilson’s barn. The Barn is a fairly intimate space with room for around a hundred people. There is a small dance floor\, and several rows of folding chair face the stage. \nInside the Barn\, people two-step\, waltz\, and flatfoot to the music that rings out onto the porch and into the grassy yard. Outside\, around the grounds\, local musicians of all ages gather to talk and jam. It is a friendly crowd\, and the players enjoy spending time with friends and meeting new ones.

SUMMARY:Celebrating Nina Simone Plaza & Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:The Eunice Waymon—Nina Simone Project (NSP) exists to honor the remarkable life and legacy of a native Tryon\, North Carolina daughter\, who achieved international recognition for her unique talent and her formidable contribution to the musical arts. \nThe musical talent of Eunice Waymon\, who was born in 1933\, evidenced itself early on. By age 4 she had begun to play piano; by age 7\, she had begun to play organ as well—each of which she did for St. Luke’s C.M.E. Church. Waymon’s formal musical training began shortly thereafter under the tutelage of Muriel Mazzanovich\, wife of noted artist Lawrence Mazzanovich. \nThat Waymon possessed a prodigious talent was recognized by many\, so much so\, that enthusiastic Tryonites created ‘The Eunice Waymon Fund’ to help underwrite the costs of her future studies. Those studies continued with Carl Friedberg at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City\, and with Vladimer Sokoloff of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. \nWaymon’s professional career\, as Nina Simone\, began in 1954. Her unique musical style merged a strong classical training with an exceptionally broad range of musical genres\, which run the gamut from classical\, gospel and jazz to pop\, folk and spiritual. That Simone asserted a powerful artistic impact upon late-twentieth-century American popular culture is evident in her expansive discography\, her musical arrangements and her original compositions.  She was and is a powerful musical force in a global theatre. \nPhiladelphia-based sculptor Zenos Frudakis was commission to create a bronze sculpture of Nina Simone. Frudakis has released the following statement. “I am delighted to share in the creation of a lasting tribute to jazz legend Nina Simone. In addition to being a fan of her work\, as an artist\, it is especially pleasing for me to be given this opportunity to honor another artist. With this statue\, her hometown will claim its own and inspire children who like her were born and raised in Tryon to realize their potential.” \nDr. Crys Armbrust\, Executive Director of the Simone Project\, expresses his deepest gratitude to Frudakis. “Our conversations have been exhilarating. I delight equally\, too\, in the fact that Zenos has been a lifelong fan of Simone’s music and civil rights’ activism.” \nSimone’s daughter Lisa Simone Kelly’s response to the Project and the sculpture is supportive and overwhelmingly positive. The watershed moment occurred when she exclaimed\, “Zenos\, I think what you are doing is amazing! This is the High Priestess of Soul.”

SUMMARY:Thursday Night Jam at the Silvermont Mansion
DESCRIPTION:The Silvermont jam session is unusual not only because of its elegant setting but also for its interesting form. The musicians—typically there are around fifteen\, and eighteen is the limit—are seated in a large circle with a single microphone on a stand to be passed around. Each player is expected to choose and announce a tune\, start the song\, and lead the group as the tune is played and sung. And so the evening goes\, song after song. Meanwhile\, non-players who are there to enjoy listening sit in the hallway or in an adjacent connecting dining room area. Some audience members flatfoot or clog a little whenever a particularly bright tune is played. Music played at the Silvermont jam ranges from bluegrass and old-time to country and gospel. Since this session is truly open to all who want to participate\, there’s even an occasional jazz or classical player in the mix. \nFolks who come to listen must also check in at the kiosk as regulars (scan card) or as visitors.

SUMMARY:Quay Smathers Memorial Singing School
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a day immersed in beautiful harmony\, great company and a homemade Dinner on the Grounds — bring a dish to share. \nQuay Smathers (1913-1997)\, singing master and recipient of the prestigious North Carolina Folk Heritage Award\, tirelessly taught shaped-note singing from Georgia to Michigan and points in between. Today\, those who learned under Quay remember his quick wit\, his clear voice\, and his strong convictions about saving a musical tradition passed down from his ancestors in Western North Carolina. \nThe Quay Smathers Memorial Singing School is devoted to carrying on his work of raising up shaped-note singers who desire to sing in the traditional style originally heard in the Blue Ridge mountains of Georgia\, North and South Carolina\, Tennessee and Virginia. The book of choice is The Christian Harmony  by William Walker and much attention is given to tempo\, phrasing\, and oral traditions. \nHeld in the historic Shook-Smathers House\, the  singing school is taught by leaders in the Blue Ridge style of shaped-note singing\, including Quay’s daughters June Smathers-Jolley and Elizabeth Smathers-Shaw\, and son-in-law Lynn Shaw. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the tradition\, a proficiency in singing shaped-notes as originally sung in the Southern Appalachians\, and resources to continue their own personal exploration of the practice.

SUMMARY:Concerts at the The Don Gibson Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Concerts at the The Don Gibson Theatre is a 400 seat venue and  intimate concert hallfeaturing best in nationally known acts\, musicians who’ve graced magazine covers\, who’ve earned Grammy Awards and Gold Albums and “Best of the Year” Awards… people whose CD’s (and albums) you may already have in your collection. We’ll also very carefully select the newest up-and-coming acts out of Nashville and New York and Austin\, acts you may not have heard of yet… but given a chance you will be talking about for months after. \nUpcoming Concerts: \n\nApril 29 – Paul Thorn\, 8:00 pm\, $32.00. We live in a world where the terms “artist” and “genius” have been rendered meaningless through overuse. To use either in describing Thorn\, though\, is not overreach. Pick up any of his dozen or so CDs. The evidence is plain to see. Just listen. It’s a kind of genius\, and it’s there plain to see\, in his music\, his art and through his performances\, which not only showcase his chops as a singer-songwriter\, but as a pitch-perfect improv comic.

SUMMARY:Concerts at Smoky Mountain Center for the Performing Arts
DESCRIPTION:Concerts at Smoky Mountain Center for the Performing Arts hosts a wide varriety of plays concerts and community events throughout the year. \nUpcoming traditiona moutain music events include: \n\n\n\nMay 13 – An Evening With Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives\, 7:30 pm\, $29.00\, $34.00\, $39.00 (VIP Package also available). With legends like George Jones\, Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard all passed on\, country music purists often echo the question Jones himself asked: “Who’s going to fill their shoes?” The answer\, in part\, is Marty Stuart.\nWhile he’s too gracious to admit it himself\, the Grammy-winning singer\, songwriter and musician is living\, breathing country-music history. He’s played alongside the masters\, from Cash to Lester Flatt\, who discovered him; been a worldwide ambassador for Nashville\, Bakersfield and points in between; and safeguarded country’s most valuable traditions and physical artifacts. Stuart continues to record and release keenly relevant music\, records that honor country’s rich legacy while advancing it into the future.\nWhen it comes to transforming country songs into tangible experience\, Stuart has a secret weapon: the Fabulous Superlatives. Made up of guitarist Kenny Vaughan\, drummer Harry Stinson and new member\, bassist Chris Scruggs\, the Superlatives are an extension of Stuart\, himself a truly visionary artist and music legend.\nMay 27 – High Road\, 7:30\, $15.00. Ask Sarah Davison what her favorite Bible verse is\, and she’ll immediately quote Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him\, and He will make your paths straight.” It’s a scripture that has accompanied the acclaimed singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist through life’s highs and lows\, and one she hand-copied—in a flowery cursive script—from her grandmother’s Bible. “That verse has been with me from my hometown of 150 people to Nashville\, going after what I feel called to do\, trusting that He’s leading me down the right road\,” she reflects.
