SUMMARY:Concerts at Jack of the Wood
DESCRIPTION:Jack of the Wood presents a wide variety of bands on a weekly basis. \nJack of the Wood is one of Downtown Asheville’s most beloved gathering spots and the original home of Green Man Brewing. We serve classic pub fare\, artisanal sandwiches\, and other comforting favorites. Our bar has 18 rotating taps featuring local and world craft brews and a great selection of whiskeys. \nUpcoming Bluegrass\, Blues\, and Old-Time bands: \n\nFebruary 26 – Supper Break\, 8 pm. Supper Break is a bluegrass band serving tasty licks night & day. Members represent many styles and areas of the country but now call Asheville home. The Supper Break LIVE EP is now available on all streaming platforms and online music stores as well as YouTube\, IG\, and FB. Don’t miss having a pint with this lively plucker’s from the heart of WNC!\nMarch 4 – Sons of Ralph\, 8pm. Members of “The Sons of Ralph” are the sons of Bluegrass pioneer Ralph Lewis. Martin and Don Lewis\, Cousin Steve Moseley\, and the “other brother” Ozzie Orengo\, Jr. make up this band of Bluegrass masters – and have been playing and singing the unique style of bluegrass music since Ralph’s upbringing in Madison County.\nMarch 5 – Knotty G’s\, 8 pm. The Knotty G’s goal is simple: to create music and an experience they feel is genuine. Gritty yet funky performances fuse with the band’s jovial nature and invite audiences to take part in the revelatory power of music while still managing to tap into the fun that can sometimes be overlooked in day-to-day life. Though The Knotty G’s are known to approach genres in unconventional ways\, doing so with great intention takes their soul-soaked mountain music to a special and reverent place\, a genuine place\, and a place where by the end of the show\, you feel as though you’ve reconnected with some old friends

SUMMARY:Music N'All at the Barn
DESCRIPTION:Not many people create a music venue in their front yard\, but several years ago\, Jerry Wilson and his wife Debbie decided their community needed a place for folks to come together and make music. \nNow\, on Tuesday nights\, and the second and fourth Saturday of each month\, people of all ages gather to see and hear bluegrass and gospel bands play in the Wilson’s barn. The Barn is a fairly intimate space with room for around a hundred people. There is a small dance floor\, and several rows of folding chair face the stage. \nInside the Barn\, people two-step\, waltz\, and flatfoot to the music that rings out onto the porch and into the grassy yard. Outside\, around the grounds\, local musicians of all ages gather to talk and jam. It is a friendly crowd\, and the players enjoy spending time with friends and meeting new ones.

SUMMARY:Thursday Night Jam at the Silvermont Mansion
DESCRIPTION:The Silvermont jam session is unusual not only because of its elegant setting but also for its interesting form. The musicians—typically there are around fifteen\, and eighteen is the limit—are seated in a large circle with a single microphone on a stand to be passed around. Each player is expected to choose and announce a tune\, start the song\, and lead the group as the tune is played and sung. And so the evening goes\, song after song. Meanwhile\, non-players who are there to enjoy listening sit in the hallway or in an adjacent connecting dining room area. Some audience members flatfoot or clog a little whenever a particularly bright tune is played. Music played at the Silvermont jam ranges from bluegrass and old-time to country and gospel. Since this session is truly open to all who want to participate\, there’s even an occasional jazz or classical player in the mix. \nFolks who come to listen must also check in at the kiosk as regulars (scan card) or as visitors.

DESCRIPTION:Concerts at Smoky Mountain Center for the Performing Arts hosts a wide varriety of plays concerts and community events throughout the year. \nUpcoming traditiona moutain music events include: \n\n\n\nMay 13 – An Evening With Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives\, 7:30 pm\, $29.00\, $34.00\, $39.00 (VIP Package also available). With legends like George Jones\, Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard all passed on\, country music purists often echo the question Jones himself asked: “Who’s going to fill their shoes?” The answer\, in part\, is Marty Stuart.\nWhile he’s too gracious to admit it himself\, the Grammy-winning singer\, songwriter and musician is living\, breathing country-music history. He’s played alongside the masters\, from Cash to Lester Flatt\, who discovered him; been a worldwide ambassador for Nashville\, Bakersfield and points in between; and safeguarded country’s most valuable traditions and physical artifacts. Stuart continues to record and release keenly relevant music\, records that honor country’s rich legacy while advancing it into the future.\nWhen it comes to transforming country songs into tangible experience\, Stuart has a secret weapon: the Fabulous Superlatives. Made up of guitarist Kenny Vaughan\, drummer Harry Stinson and new member\, bassist Chris Scruggs\, the Superlatives are an extension of Stuart\, himself a truly visionary artist and music legend.\nMay 27 – High Road\, 7:30\, $15.00. Ask Sarah Davison what her favorite Bible verse is\, and she’ll immediately quote Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him\, and He will make your paths straight.” It’s a scripture that has accompanied the acclaimed singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist through life’s highs and lows\, and one she hand-copied—in a flowery cursive script—from her grandmother’s Bible. “That verse has been with me from my hometown of 150 people to Nashville\, going after what I feel called to do\, trusting that He’s leading me down the right road\,” she reflects.

SUMMARY:Holiday Cheer Concert with Newberry & Verch
DESCRIPTION:Growing up\, musicians Joe Newberry and April Verch absorbed traditions of home and hearth – in his Missouri Ozarks and her Ottawa Valley of Canada. The holidays have always been a special time of year for both\, with the lure of family and friends\, festive decorations\, gifts under the tree\, and always…. music. So now\, each year the duo sets out in a modern day sleigh (with four-wheel drive) to perform their eagerly anticipated holiday tour. Original songs join timeless hymns. Stories warm the heart and give a twinkle to the eye. Lively fiddle and banjo numbers combine with traditional dance steps to illustrate happy times when people made their own fun at the holidays\, and all year long. Make your holiday concert list\, and check it twice… Newberry and Verch are coming to town! \nJoe Newberry grew up in a family full of singers and dancers. He took up the guitar and banjo as a teenager and learned fiddle tunes from great Missouri fiddlers. April Verch grew up listening to her Dad’s country band play for dances in the Ottawa Valley. She started step dancing at age three and fiddling at age six. Both Newberry & Verch became masters of their traditions and tour the world with their respective bands and projects. Yet they never forget the roots of their music\, that connection to the people in the audience\, on the dance floor\, to the community sparked by a good song. \nFor these veteran performers who come from distinct traditions and parts of the world\, their collaboration is fueled by their kindred passion for bringing people together to celebrate traditional music. Blues and ballads stem into Canadian regional styles and originals. Their voices blend in harmony\, their tasteful instrumentals prove that these masters have nothing left to prove\, and then their feet kick up the dust in perfect rhythm…and together\, they make you remember why this music existed in the first place. \nNewberry & Verch are excited to perform at the Earl Scruggs Center for the first time! They will be bringing along their recording project\, “On This Christmas Day” (released December 3\, 2021 on Slab Town Records) which features some of the most requested music from their holiday tours!

SUMMARY:Mountain Strong
DESCRIPTION:This is the inaugural event of our Mountain Strong series\, an occasional series designed to celebrate all the great things about the culture of the Southern mountains. \nOne of the great traditions of the Southern mountains is successful farming\, both to sustain the family unit and to earn much-needed cash to pay property taxes and income taxes. Southern mountaineers\, including those in Western North Carolina\, knew how to care for the land and for growing things before it became a fashionable “environmental” thing to do. \nFriday\, May 5 – White Rock Revival\, 7:00pm – White Rock Revival whose members hail from music-rich Madison County\, will do double duty on May 5 as they play for us in addition to sharing descriptions and stories of farm life from first-hand experience. Formed in the early winter of 2019\, White Rock Revival is a modern-traditional bluegrass band. Playing a variety of styles within the context of the bluegrass genre\, White Rock Revival has a heavy rotation of gospel\, traditional country from the 60’s through the 90’s\, and hard-driving bluegrass. With strong family harmony and an instrumental foundation\, they are an authentic representation of bluegrass music from members who were born and raised in the mountains where the music originated. \nThis event is FREE and open to the public.

SUMMARY:The Way of the Dulcimer Retreat
DESCRIPTION:No experience is necessary to enjoy the gentle\, Tai Chi related exercises for relaxation and rejuvenation. All levels of dulcimer players are welcome. Learn to combine the benefits from the exercises with innovative playing techniques to explore the depths of playing traditional mountain music on the dulcimer. \nLimited enrollment (15) insures more individual attention as well as facilitating fellowship amongst the participants. Concerts and Jamming with instructor Don Pedi and Special Guest artists\, provide a direct link to mountain traditions going back for generations. \nDon Pedi has been playing the dulcimer since 1968. He’s been practicing T’ai Chi Ch’uan and related healing and meditation arts since 1971\, and teaching them since the mid 1980s. He ran the T’ai Chi Center of Asheville from 1989 – 1993. Don then taught an introduction to T’ai Chi class for the College for Seniors at UNCA in Asheville until 2007. More recently\, with a busy music schedule to keep up with\, he teaches T’ai Chi related exercises mostly at music camps.  Most of Don’s music was learned face to face from authentic traditional sources\, both past and present. The same is true of his healing arts. \nA gifted player and teacher\, Don shares his knowledge in a relaxed\, friendly\, and non-competitive manner\, creating an atmosphere conducive to everyone learning at their own pace. The simple and effective T’ai Chi and related exercises help to reduce stress and improve balance. When we apply the these ancient principles and techniques to playing the dulcimer\, the result is to improve playing skills and aid in the development of economy of motion. \nThe classes are scheduled to create a cumulative effect\, allowing one to leave with a working understanding of the topics presented. Please apply only if you are at least willing to participate in all the workshops. Most people find these retreats fun\, as well as a source of inspiration and rejuvenation. One leaves with a wealth of dulcimer playing techniques\, songs and tunes.\nHand outs of most of the music and Taoist rejuvenation exercises help one continue to practice at home. \nThe Way of Dulcimer Retreat Schedule: \nWednesday – May 24th \n\n3:00 – 5:00pm Registration\n5:00 – 6:30pm Orientation -Orientation will start with introductions. Then we will discuss the benefits of T’ai Chi related exercises and relaxation techniques\, and how they apply to playing of music with it’s roots in the agrarian culture of our ancestors.\n6:30 – 7:30 Supper\n8:00 ’til ?\n\n          Jamming \nThursday – May 25th \n\n8:00 – 9:00 – Breakfast\n9:30 – 10:00 – T’ai Chi Warmups – Easy and gentle routine to loosen up.\n10:15 – 11:00 – Dulcimer History – A short video presentation of the History of the dulcimer. Foot stomping and heartwarming\, the Barkers honor an authentic Appalachian heritage of old-time and gospel music combined with a riveting mix of high energy bluegrass and backroad Americana designed to keep you on the edge of your seat while taking you back to a simpler time in life.\nJeremy Barker minored in Appalachian studies at East TN State University and has gained regional recognition for his extraordinary vocal prowess and seasoned command of the flattop guitar. Scott Barker effectively draws mellow harmonics from the mandolin and adds to the powerful harmony that resounds throughout their performance. Angie Barker energetically enhances the rhythm on the upright bass. \n\nSaturday\, June 24\, 2023 – Curtis Blackwell and the Dixie Bluegrass Boys \n\nFrom the hills of north Georgia comes the high lonesome sounds of bluegrass at its finest Curtis Blackwell and the Dixie Bluegrass Boys. Though some of the members have changed through the years Curtis Blackwell has remained the same… hard driving high lonesome solos with great vocal harmony. \nCurtis was once a member of Bill Monroe’s Bluegrass Boys where he played guitar and sang various parts before starting a long and current task of the band leader and still is today. He is currently playing banjo and sing as well. Vic Blackwell has been playing mandolin and sings as well. He has been a part of the group for 20 plus years. While in college in Virginia she was exposed to Bluegrass music and fell in love with it. After school she moved back to Chattanooga where she teamed up with former classmate Bobby Burns. In addition to her skills on the bass fiddle\, Diana is an excellent singer and songwriter. \n\nSaturday\, August 26\, 2023 – Just Us\n\nTo close out the Summer Concert Series\, we have brought back a fan favorite – Just Us! \nThis is an exciting band based out of East Tennessee that was formed in September of 2006 and features a unique blend of bluegrass\, country and contemporary bluegrass. They take pride in their strong vocals\, tight harmonies and solid picking. \nStacy Wilson plays guitar and sings lead.
