SUMMARY:Rhiannon Giddens
DESCRIPTION:Rhiannon Giddens imbues her brand of folk music with miles-deep historical roots and contemporary sensibilities\, pursuing an authentic understanding of the country’s musical origins through art. \nA two-time Grammy Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning singer and instrumentalist\, MacArthur “Genius” grant recipient\, and composer of opera\, ballet\, and film\, Giddens has centered her work around the mission of lifting up people whose contributions to American musical history have previously been overlooked or erased. \nAs Pitchfork once said\, “few artists are so fearless and so ravenous in their exploration” — a journey that has led to NPR naming her one of its 25 Most Influential Women Musicians of the 21st Century and to American Songwriter calling her “one of the most important musical minds currently walking the planet.”

SUMMARY:Ballad Night at the Old Marshall Jail Hotel
DESCRIPTION:The Old Marshall Jail Ballad Swap is an incredible opportunity to immerse yourself in our Appalachian Heritage. This unique event\, hosted by Josh Copus\, Donna Ray Norton\, Sheila Kay Adams\, and Melanie Rice celebrates the rich tradition of ballads in Southern Appalachia. Ballads are hauntingly beautiful stories and narrative poems passed down through oral tradition and are told in song. This is a very casual event that we like to think of as a front porch experience\, where ballad singers from across the region tell stories\, sing songs\, talk about our history\, and have a great time! \nWhile ballads have been sung throughout Southern Appalachia\, Madison County in particular is known for its rich treasure trove of ballads and ballad singers. When English folk song collector Cecil Sharp visited Madison County in 1916\, he said he had found a “nest of singing birds.” The ballad tradition in Madison County alone goes back at least 9 generations\, making it one of the oldest unbroken non-indigenous oral traditions in the United States. \nSome of our regular Ballad Singers:  \n\nSheila Kay Adams \nDonna Ray Norton\nWilliam & Sarah Ritter \nBranson Raines\nLeila Weinstein\nSarah Songbird Burkey\nSusan Pepper\nJohn Analo Phillips\nJudy Rhodes\nand more (you can never tell who might show up!) \n\nCome early to get a table\, order yourself some supper and a few drinks!

SUMMARY:The Winter Ramble: A Celebration of Traditional American Mountain Music and Culture
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a weekend filled with authentic sounds of the Appalachian Mountains during The Winter Ramble\, Feb. 27-March 1. \nThis inaugural event isn’t a fenced-in festival; it’s a three-day ramble through Hendersonville and Henderson County featuring traditional mountain music – the kind born from front porches\, barns and dance halls across the Blue Ridge. \nMusic halls\, breweries\, wineries and other small-stage venues enliven this late-winter weekend with a collection of bluegrass pickers\, old-time string bands\, country singer-songwriters\, Americana and folk duos\, and mountain storytellers. \nHeadliners for The Winter Ramble include: Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Trey Hensley; chart-topping bluegrass quintet Unspoken Tradition; Asheville-based country-roots group Amanda Anne Platt & The Honeycutters; master fiddler and storyteller Josh Goforth; and husband-and-wife Americana duo Chatham Rabbits. \n“For three days\, people can ramble across Henderson County\, warmed with music shaped by tradition\, collaboration and place — and blown away by the talent lighting up our stages\,” says Michelle Owens\, executive director of Visit Hendersonville. \nSome events are free. Some are ticketed. Choose your own path through a community alive with sounds that have echoed throughout these mountains for generations. \nFor a full schedule and tickets visit: https://winterramble.com/. A plentiful selection of lodging is available at: https://visithendersonvillenc.org/lodging. \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Songs of the Folk
DESCRIPTION:Well-crafted music and lyrics\, flawless harmonies\, intricate instrumentation\, and original storytelling…\nA.T. and Lauren Cason are lifelong musicians who perform original American folk and blues songs that harken back to the roots music of the American South as well as the 1960s Folk Revival artists of NYC’s Greenwich Village. It’s Simon & Garfunkel mixed with early Dylan\, with a touch of Leonard Cohen and a helping of true Piedmont blues fingerstyle guitar from North Carolina. \nJust back from an impressive two-year stint living\, recording\, and touring throughout England\, Songs of the Folk is happy to be sharing their original songs and stories with audiences throughout the Southeast. Known for impressive fingerstyle guitar playing as well as entrancing harmonies and warm stage presence\, the duo thrives in listening room venues where audiences leave feeling like an old friend of the Casons and a part of Songs of the Folk.

SUMMARY:Songs of the Folk
DESCRIPTION:A.T. and Lauren Cason channel the spirit of American folk and blues with storytelling that’s both timeless and deeply personal. Their sound blends Simon & Garfunkel–style harmonies with early Dylan lyricism\, Leonard Cohen’s introspection\, and the authentic fingerstyle blues of North Carolina’s Piedmont tradition. Well-crafted lyrics and intricate instrumentation come together to create songs that feel like chapters in a book—vivid\, unfolding narratives you’re eager to hear next. Their debut full-length album\, Sun-Scorched Land\, brings band arrangements to songs they’ve performed live for years\, played by real musicians and recorded with heartfelt authenticity. Together\, they craft music that resonates long after the last note fades.
