SUMMARY:Ballad Night at the Old Marshall Jail Hotel
DESCRIPTION:The Old Marshall Jail Ballad Swap is an incredible opportunity to immerse yourself in our Appalachian Heritage. This unique event\, hosted by Josh Copus\, Donna Ray Norton\, Sheila Kay Adams\, and Melanie Rice celebrates the rich tradition of ballads in Southern Appalachia. Ballads are hauntingly beautiful stories and narrative poems passed down through oral tradition and are told in song. This is a very casual event that we like to think of as a front porch experience\, where ballad singers from across the region tell stories\, sing songs\, talk about our history\, and have a great time! \nWhile ballads have been sung throughout Southern Appalachia\, Madison County in particular is known for its rich treasure trove of ballads and ballad singers. When English folk song collector Cecil Sharp visited Madison County in 1916\, he said he had found a “nest of singing birds.” The ballad tradition in Madison County alone goes back at least 9 generations\, making it one of the oldest unbroken non-indigenous oral traditions in the United States. \nSome of our regular Ballad Singers:  \n\nSheila Kay Adams \nDonna Ray Norton\nWilliam & Sarah Ritter \nBranson Raines\nLeila Weinstein\nSarah Songbird Burkey\nSusan Pepper\nJohn Analo Phillips\nJudy Rhodes\nand more (you can never tell who might show up!) \n\nCome early to get a table\, order yourself some supper and a few drinks!

SUMMARY:Cullowhee Friends & Family Reunion
DESCRIPTION:Cullowhee creates “mountain rock” music with roots at Western Carolina University.\nCullowhee is the name of the small town in North Carolina that’s the home of Western Carolina University. It’s also the name chosen by a group of musicians who started a band there in 1974. The band lasted until 1984. \nStarting as a trio\, Edwards\, Clark\, and Flynn\, the band grew to six pieces and created a musical sound they called “Mountain Rock” – a combination of folk\, country\, gospel\, pop and rock. They were “Americana” before there WAS “Americana.” \nEach band member wrote songs encompassing styles including pop\, rock\, country\, folk\, jazz\, reggae\, and other styles\, and played a multitude of musical instruments. Every set featured segments by each member – a show within a show. The mixture of personality\, music\, comedy\, and sincerity made a connection with many audiences. \nCullowhee lives on through the music and love of their fans.

SUMMARY:Stecoah Community Jam
DESCRIPTION:Community Jam \nEvery 3rd Tuesday\n5:30 pm to 7:30 pm \nMark your calendars for the 3rd Tuesday of every month to join us for a Schoolhouse Community Jam. Bring your instruments and join our circle! We invite musicians of all levels to come out and join together for an evening of playing together. \nYou can begin gathering / playing anytime after 5:30 pm. 5:30 – 6:00 will be a Slow Jam – great for beginners and novice musicians. You will be able to meet and play along with our JAM Band students. It’s the perfect opportunity to get your feet wet if you are new to jamming. The evening is strictly a jam time (no instruction) but is open to all ages and abilities. Our goal is to create a nurturing environment to encourage budding musicians (and those with dusty instruments). The remaining jam time we will take direction from the group as to what and how fast we play. We hope to see you there! \nNOTE: For the time being the monthly potluck is on hold but if the group desires to have the potluck we can resume it in the future.

SUMMARY:Zuma Coffee Bluegrass Jam Session
DESCRIPTION:Every third Thursday evening of the month\, Zuma Coffee becomes a crowded bluegrass and old-time music venue. Those who want to get a seat inside the place should arrive a good bit earlier than the 7 p.m. start time. The eager-to-play musicians often get going before seven\, and the gathering crowd grows large as a result. The jam session is part jam and part stage show. The musicians face the audience and not each other\, as is the customary arrangement at a mountain jam session\, and most stand to play\, rather than sitting. All musicians who want to join in and play are welcomed\, regulars or not\, and a place in the line is made available. The jam session is open to everyone and focuses on old-time and bluegrass music. Listeners are welcome. The coffee is tasty and dinner is served!

Musicians of all levels are welcome to bring instruments and join the circle\, while community members are invited to come listen and enjoy an evening of traditional music. Musical genres will rotate weekly\, highlighting a variety of traditions and styles. There will be four Warren Wilson College faculty members who will rotate hosting each week: \n\n1st Fridays: Bluegrass Session with Korey Brodsky\n2nd Fridays: Old-Time and Songs with Emolyn Liden\n3rd Fridays: Old-Time Session with Clarke Williams\n4th Fridays: Celtic Session with Maura Scanlin\n\nThrough the partnership\, $100 from each weekly session will be donated to the Warren Wilson Music Scholarship Fund\, which provides both recognition and financial assistance to outstanding undergraduate students enrolled or planning to enroll in Warren Wilson College who are deserving of funds to meet their necessary college expenses. \n“Music has always been a vital part of Warren Wilson’s culture and of the wider Appalachian region\,” said Dr. Jason Decristofaro\, Professor of Music and Music Department Chair at Warren Wilson College. “This partnership creates a space where the community can gather\, share music\, and invest directly in opportunities for student musicians.” \nThe scholarship fund helps talented undergraduate musicians meet the costs of college while continuing to develop their craft. Additional donations to the fund will also be welcomed through a QR code available at the events. \n“Community music jams are about connection and creativity\,” said Tammy Clayton\, Director of Retail Operations at Ginger’s Revenge. “We’re excited to host these gatherings and help support the next generation of musicians coming out of Warren Wilson.” \nFor more information\, please contact Dr. Jason DeCristofaro at jdecristofaro@warren-wilson.edu or (828)545-3916 \n“Sit a Spell” hosts: \n\nClarke Williams\nEmolyn Liden\nKorey Brodsky
