SUMMARY:Zuma Coffee Bluegrass Jam Session
DESCRIPTION:Every third Thursday evening of the month\, Zuma Coffee becomes a crowded bluegrass and old-time music venue. Those who want to get a seat inside the place should arrive a good bit earlier than the 7 p.m. start time. The eager-to-play musicians often get going before seven\, and the gathering crowd grows large as a result. The jam session is part jam and part stage show. The musicians face the audience and not each other\, as is the customary arrangement at a mountain jam session\, and most stand to play\, rather than sitting. All musicians who want to join in and play are welcomed\, regulars or not\, and a place in the line is made available. The jam session is open to everyone and focuses on old-time and bluegrass music. Listeners are welcome. The coffee is tasty and dinner is served!

SUMMARY:Rhiannon Giddens
DESCRIPTION:Rhiannon Giddens imbues her brand of folk music with miles-deep historical roots and contemporary sensibilities\, pursuing an authentic understanding of the country’s musical origins through art. \nA two-time Grammy Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning singer and instrumentalist\, MacArthur “Genius” grant recipient\, and composer of opera\, ballet\, and film\, Giddens has centered her work around the mission of lifting up people whose contributions to American musical history have previously been overlooked or erased. \nAs Pitchfork once said\, “few artists are so fearless and so ravenous in their exploration” — a journey that has led to NPR naming her one of its 25 Most Influential Women Musicians of the 21st Century and to American Songwriter calling her “one of the most important musical minds currently walking the planet.”

SUMMARY:Community Contra & Bal Folk Dance
DESCRIPTION:The next of the spring series of live-music community dances will be hosted by Cowee Arts & Heritage Center\, on Sunday\, April 19\, starting at 2:30pm. This dance will feature both contra and Bal Folk traditions. Contra dance is a form of social folk dancing from which square dancing evolved\, so it shares many of the same movements\, and if you enjoy the energy of contras and partner dancing\, chances are high they you’ll enjoy Bal Folk. Come try this special opportunity to sample dances from various regions of France and Europe ranging from raucous to rhythmic\, from circular or linear in form to partner dances. As always\, all steps will be taught and called throughout the dance\, no partner is necessary\, generations mix\, all are welcome\, and no dance experience or fancy clothing are necessary. \nThe Bal Folk dances will be taught by Annie Fain Barralon who learned Bal Folk when she married into a French family of dancers and musicians. Wendy Graham\, who is the Music & Dance Programs Coordinator at John C. Campbell Folk School\, has been dancing and calling for decades will call the contras. Each multi-talented caller will play with the band when not calling. \nLive music and song will be provided by Bal Iti: Géraud Barralon and Jonah Graves. Géraud Barralon hails from Ardèche in the Rhône-Alpes region of France. Growing up in the “Bal Folk” culture\, Geraud has been dedicating his musical endeavors to the art of European social dancing since 2010\, he is one of the main performers and organizers of the event called “Le Bal Itinerant\,” which takes place in France every year. \nJonah Graves is a multi-instrumentalist from Brasstown\, North Carolina\, rooted in the rich musical traditions of the Appalachian Mountains. For this dance\, Jonah will be picking up the octave mandolin to explore the rhythmic and melodic possibilities of tunes for Bal Folk — blending Appalachian sensibility with the vibrant energy of European dance traditions. \nBeginners are strongly encouraged to arrive by 2:30pm for the instruction\, and experienced dancers are on hand to help those new to contra dance get started with the movements. The dance is from 3-5pm. A suggested donation of $10-20 per person goes to pay the bands\, callers\, for flyers — as well as venue & sound tech when we need to hire those; kids age 14 & under are free; children over age 8 who are game to participate\, or sit and watch with an adult may also attend. \nCowee School Arts & Heritage Center is located at 51 Cowee School Drive\, Franklin\, NC (just off of route 28\, 7 miles north of downtown Franklin). Bring a closed water container and a snack if you wish. Smooth-soled shoes work best for dancing on wood floors. Please do not wear perfume or other scents to the dances. SUMMARY:Stecoah Community Jam
DESCRIPTION:Community Jam \nEvery 3rd Tuesday\n5:30 pm to 7:30 pm \nMark your calendars for the 3rd Tuesday of every month to join us for a Schoolhouse Community Jam. Bring your instruments and join our circle! We invite musicians of all levels to come out and join together for an evening of playing together. \nYou can begin gathering / playing anytime after 5:30 pm. 5:30 – 6:00 will be a Slow Jam – great for beginners and novice musicians. You will be able to meet and play along with our JAM Band students. It’s the perfect opportunity to get your feet wet if you are new to jamming. The evening is strictly a jam time (no instruction) but is open to all ages and abilities. Our goal is to create a nurturing environment to encourage budding musicians (and those with dusty instruments). The remaining jam time we will take direction from the group as to what and how fast we play. We hope to see you there! \nNOTE: For the time being the monthly potluck is on hold but if the group desires to have the potluck we can resume it in the future.
