SUMMARY:Weekly Jam Sessions at the Jones House
DESCRIPTION:Every Thursday evening from 7-10 PM\, join local and visiting musicians at the Jones House for an old-time jam session. After catching up and choosing a key the music will begin\, with the last call for tunes coming around 9:45. \n\n\n\nJams are not held on holidays and may be cancelled on days of inclement weather. Please call the Jones House at 828-268-6280 if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Ballad Night at the Old Marshall Jail Hotel
DESCRIPTION:The Old Marshall Jail Ballad Swap is an incredible opportunity to immerse yourself in our Appalachian Heritage. This unique event\, hosted by Josh Copus\, Donna Ray Norton\, Sheila Kay Adams\, and Melanie Rice celebrates the rich tradition of ballads in Southern Appalachia. Ballads are hauntingly beautiful stories and narrative poems passed down through oral tradition and are told in song. This is a very casual event that we like to think of as a front porch experience\, where ballad singers from across the region tell stories\, sing songs\, talk about our history\, and have a great time! \nWhile ballads have been sung throughout Southern Appalachia\, Madison County in particular is known for its rich treasure trove of ballads and ballad singers. When English folk song collector Cecil Sharp visited Madison County in 1916\, he said he had found a “nest of singing birds.” The ballad tradition in Madison County alone goes back at least 9 generations\, making it one of the oldest unbroken non-indigenous oral traditions in the United States. \nSome of our regular Ballad Singers:  \n\nSheila Kay Adams \nDonna Ray Norton\nWilliam & Sarah Ritter \nBranson Raines\nLeila Weinstein\nSarah Songbird Burkey\nSusan Pepper\nJohn Analo Phillips\nJudy Rhodes\nand more (you can never tell who might show up!) \n\nCome early to get a table\, order yourself some supper and a few drinks!

SUMMARY:Bluegrass at the Rock: Junior Sisk
DESCRIPTION:The Old Rock School in Valdese\, North Carolina\, has gained national recognition for its renowned bluegrass concerts. The 500-seat auditorium is the perfect place to hear all of your favorites. All of us at the Old Rock School are very excited about the 2024 season\, featuring an impressive lineup of talented bands. The handicap entrance is located at the side of the building (elevator). \nBluegrass at the Rock: Junior Sisk – April 11\, 2026 \n“Junior Sisk is widely recognized as one of today’s top bluegrass vocalists and is a constant reminder that traditional bluegrass is still alive and well. A longtime resident of the Virginia Blue Ridge\, his bluegrass pedigree runs deep. Influenced by a father who wrote songs and played guitar and a mother who sang\, Sisk first learned to play around age 14. His early influences included The Stanley Brothers\, Larry Sparks\, and Dave Evans\, but he often credits the Johnson Mountain Boys with inspiring him to pursue bluegrass professionally. Sisk first made his mark in bluegrass as a songwriter in the early 1990s\, penning classic Lonesome River Band songs like “Game (I Can’t Win)” and “Tears Are Blinding Me.” (From juniorsisk.com/about) \nAll seating is general admission unless you are a season ticket holder. Season Ticket holders will receive a reserved seat of their choice for the duration of the season. The 2025-2026 Season will kick off in October and run through April 2026. Each year the Town of Valdese Community Affairs Office works diligently to bring outstanding bluegrass performances to the Old Rock School stage.

SUMMARY:Zuma Coffee Bluegrass Jam Session
DESCRIPTION:Every third Thursday evening of the month\, Zuma Coffee becomes a crowded bluegrass and old-time music venue. Those who want to get a seat inside the place should arrive a good bit earlier than the 7 p.m. start time. The eager-to-play musicians often get going before seven\, and the gathering crowd grows large as a result. The jam session is part jam and part stage show. The musicians face the audience and not each other\, as is the customary arrangement at a mountain jam session\, and most stand to play\, rather than sitting. All musicians who want to join in and play are welcomed\, regulars or not\, and a place in the line is made available. The jam session is open to everyone and focuses on old-time and bluegrass music. Listeners are welcome. The coffee is tasty and dinner is served!
