Raised on different sides of the Ohio River, a shared calling to the music traditions of Appalachia drew Sarah Elizabeth Burkey and Susan Pepper to Western North Carolina, where they met in 2016. Armed with banjo, dulcimer, and guitar, these songbirds present traditional mountain ballads and folk songs as well as new old-time compositions. Bringing their voices together in harmony, Pepper and Burkey amplify the ballad singing traditions so they can resonate with listeners today. They have shared the stage at regional venues such as the Old Jailhouse Ballad Swap, Mountain Heritage Day at Western Carolina University and the Jones House Cultural Center.
The Folk School features some of the finest regional and national acts performing eclectic roots music. We’ll have standard seating available, first come first serve. A donation of $5-15 per adult is suggested, but all are welcome regardless of contribution. Folk School Students and Staff are not asked to donate. Any funds raised support traditional arts and help us strive for equitable pay for performers. *Lineup and schedule are subject to change, for the most up to date details check the schedule at folkschool.org/concerts
