Old Helton School

This friendly and fun event is held at the Old Helton School, a small brick and frame building that serves as a community center for the northern area of Ashe County. Once led principally by the fiddler Dean Sturgill and the late tobacco farmer and bluegrass banjo player Larry Pennington (1946 - 2003), this weekly event is truly community-based entertainment. It's very popular with local folks, and the small classroom turned concert hall is frequently filled to overflowing by 7 p.m.
