Joe Penland with Hannah Belle in Concert

Joe Penland was born and raised in rural Madison County in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. He is the proud steward of twelve generations and over 350 years of the rich oral tradition of his Scotch and English ancestors.

From his birth, he has listened to and learned the stories and “love songs” these travelers brought with them across the ocean, then southwest to the narrow coves and high meadows that many consider the richest repository of Great Britain’s folk songs in the world.

Hannah Furgiuele’s musical education began with an old record player in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. A steady stream of 60s folk rock and rhythm and blues, instilled a strong foundation and sense of home. Furgiuele began to explore the roots of the music originating from the mountains that surrounded her, unearthing the remnants of old time mountain music, while cutting a clear path with both fiddle and guitar. Hannah’s sweet melodies and lyrical curiosity entwine both lore and language of Appalachia’s green mountains into accessible and tightly knit tales.
